Things to do in Paddock Wood

Paddock Wood is a railway town in hop and orchard country, about 7 miles from Royal Tunbridge Wells and a short train ride from Tonbridge. Footpaths, Scotney Castle, Sissinghurst and the Spa Valley Railway are all within reach.

A day out in Paddock Wood

Paddock Wood grew up around its railway, which opened in 1842 and carried fruit and hops from local farms to London and the coast. Each summer pickers used to arrive from the city to work in the surrounding hop gardens, and oast houses built to dry the hops are still a common sight around the town. The area remains a centre for hop growing and for distributing fruit and vegetables, and roadside stalls sell apples, strawberries, asparagus and cherries in season. The town is about 7 miles from Royal Tunbridge Wells, next to the villages of Matfield and Brenchley.

Paddock Wood station is managed by Southeastern and has a large car park, and Visit Tunbridge Wells says Tonbridge is about 15 minutes away by train, for its castle and boat trips on the Medway. A nature trail heads out from the Victorian station through woods, orchards and farmland and passes the cemetery where Dorothy, a daughter of Charles Dickens, is buried. Public footpaths also follow the route of the Hop Pickers' Line, a single track branch that ran from 1892 to 1961. Within about 30 minutes by car are Salomons Estate in Southborough, The Pantiles, The Amelia Scott and the Spa Valley Railway in Royal Tunbridge Wells, and the castles and gardens of Scotney and Sissinghurst.
