St John's Jerusalem is a 13th-century chapel built by the Knights Hospitaller, set in a peaceful moated garden beside the River Darent near Dartford. Look inside the light, well-preserved chapel, then follow the garden paths and bridges with a picnic. It opens on just one afternoon a month in season, and an hour is enough.

Highlights

  • A rare surviving chapel of the Knights Hospitaller from the early 13th century
  • A garden bounded by the River Darent and an ancient moat
  • Fruit trees, yew hedges, wild flowers and an avenue of horse chestnuts
  • Seats and bridges for a quiet picnic

Good to know

  • Dogs on short leads are welcome in the garden but not in the chapel
  • The house is a private residence, so only the chapel and garden are open
  • Farningham Road station is about 1.5 miles away
