The surviving private rooms of a knight's house from about 1290, one of the rarest pieces of medieval domestic building in Kent. You can see the solar, a barrel-vaulted undercroft, a small chapel and a garderobe, with a later red-brick farmhouse standing where the great hall was. It is unstaffed and free, so it makes an easy stop on a walk from Ightham Mote.
Highlights
- Solar chamber from the time of Edward I
- Barrel-vaulted undercroft
- Small chapel and garderobe
- Linked to Ightham Mote by a circular walk
Good to know
- Free and unstaffed, with no facilities
- Dogs on short leads are welcome in the grounds but not in the building
- Parking is extremely limited, so walking in from Ightham Mote is a good option

The Chaser Inn is a handsome tile-hung country pub looking over Shipbourne's village green, right beside St Giles' Church. Inside there are fires for winter, and outside a courtyard and garden for warmer days. The seasonal British menu covers pub classics, vegan dishes and steaks, and there is afternoon tea and a weekly Steak Night too. Ightham Mote and the Greensand Way are close by, so it pairs well with a countryside walk.
